I want to talk about confetti and why it makes me uneasy, even though I enjoy celebrations. Last summer I was at a local parade. Confetti rained down like tiny coloured snow. Children squealed and adults laughed. I collected a handful because I thought it might be useful for a craft project. Later I learned that much of the material was plastic. Many people assume confetti is biodegradable, but in reality some types do not break down quickly. One official even insisted the city cleaned the streets in less than an hour, which surprised me. Others claimed confetti dissolves in water within a day, but that is not always true. The environmental consequences can be serious. Tiny pieces can harm wildlife. They can clog drains after heavy rain. On the other hand, the joy is real. I recognise the tradition and the shared moment it creates. My view is mixed. I suggest small changes. Use paper or seed confetti. Try bubbles or fabric streamers as alternatives. Encourage organisers to choose compostable options. That way we keep the fun but limit the damage.
