I want to talk about how small moments can gel into lasting movements. At first an idea feels like a single ember under ash. That ember may smoulder, or it may throw out a cinder that drifts and ignites elsewhere. Sometimes a crumb of evidence, or a tiny success, builds confidence and encourages people to act. When separate efforts gel, people begin to coordinate and a clear plan takes shape. But not all sparks are harmless; a stray ember can wreak destruction if neglected. I remember how a single cinder from a campfire nearly set a meadow alight two summers ago. That small cinder led to a fire that caused more smoke than anyone expected, and it did wreak significant damage to hedgerows. In my neighbourhood a single ember of interest among volunteers became a major campaign to plant trees.
