Last summer I spent several afternoons in a small coastal park to observe environmental problems. The park's iron gate had posters, rope and plastic bags tangled in it. At first the salt-scented breeze made the afternoon pleasant and I felt hopeful. Local volunteers were already working. They collected litter and filled sacks with single-use plastic. Many volunteers raised their eyebrows at how much rubbish the sea had deposited. A councillor had insisted publicly that air quality had improved by 30 percent in the past year. I read a faded sign near the factory stating it had closed five years earlier, and my eyebrows went up again. Further along the beach the factory's rusty gate stood ajar with a row of old barrels beside it. Occasionally a breeze from the industrial side brought a chemical smell. The volunteers also planted young trees along the dunes. That small planting gave everyone a brief respite from the unrewarding work. Despite council claims, visible pollution and the barrels suggested the issue was not yet resolved.
