Every year our town holds a small culture and craft festival. It celebrates food and handmade art. Potters set up benches and extrude clay through simple tools to make long coils. The event began in 1890, so some local people call it an old tradition. Visitors are told not to smudge the wet paint on masks. Artists warn parents because children often smudge paint on their clothes while they join in. The festival gives a welcome break from the mundane routine of daily life. It turns ordinary tasks into bright displays and lifts people out of mundane days. A common motif is the reptile, especially lizards carved in clay.
