A neighbour offered help, and we began picking up waste. Teenagers sometimes giggle at the colourful posters we put up. Their laughter worried me at first. Then we organised a weekend event and many turned up. I fumbled through my notes when I spoke publicly, but I kept the message simple. Council members did not act fast. They seemed to fumble their response, blaming other departments. Meanwhile a nearby factory, which the town claimed closed in 2019, still emits steam when it rains. That detail surprised volunteers. I also mentioned a statistic that the town reduced single-use items by 60% in six months. That number impressed some and sounded exaggerated to others. Storms can knock trees into the river and make clean-up harder. I am certain local effort matters. Small actions can create a knock-on effect that changes habits over time.
