I want to describe a local pollution problem that concerns many of us. Recently thick grey sludge has been appearing along the river banks. The sludge coats rocks and makes the water look oily. Residents say the sludge smells bad. Volunteers also reported fifty dead fish last month, although that number is still being checked. Industrial effluent and household sewage often commingle before reaching the estuary. When these wastes commingle it becomes harder to tell which source is to blame. The factory insists its discharge is treated. The council promised action within two weeks, but nothing visible happened. Indigenous families have fished and gathered plants here for generations. The indigenous community say their health and traditions are at risk. They gave the factory an ultimatum last month. The ultimatum demanded a full clean-up within seven days or a road blockade would follow. The ultimatum made it clear their patience had run out. Some neighbours planted fragrant herbs and flowers to mask the smell. The fragrant gardens soothed the smell for visitors, but could not remove toxins. In my view, short-term fixes like fragrant plants only hide symptoms. Long-term control requires stopping the pollution at source and ensuring wastes do not commingle again.
