I work in community outreach for river restoration. Last summer there was a brush fire on the hill near the marsh. Fire crews had to extinguish the flames quickly to protect a nearby wetland. Volunteers also tried to extinguish campfires that were still smouldering after a local festival. The smoke from those blazes created an achromatic haze over the town. The sky looked almost achromatic, as if soot had removed colour from the scene. Such events often portend larger climate shifts, and many residents now see each intense summer storm as something that may portend future flooding. Scientists propose substitution of single-use plastics with reusable alternatives as a simple step. They also recommend the substitution of coal with renewables to cut emissions. In one report the suggested substitution was claimed to cut waste by ninety percent, a figure that has been disputed by other experts. There is also a negation of some common myths. For example, there is a clear negation of the belief that planting a few trees alone will reverse industrial pollution. Policy makers sometimes act as if negation of responsibility is acceptable. Practical clean-up techniques include chemical substitution and improved filtration. These measures reduce risk but do not completely remove it. If small fires keep being allowed, they could portend more severe damage and may not be easily extinguished.
