Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Lena (Coordinator): Good morning. I'm Lena, the volunteer coordinator at the Community Hub. Tom (New Volunteer): Hi Lena, I'm Tom. Thanks for taking me through the details. Lena (Coordinator): We're a small centre on the periphery of town. It's near the old turnpike. Tom (New Volunteer): Oh, I drive past the turnpike every day. Which exit should I use? Lena (Coordinator): If you come from the turnpike side, use the northern exit. That side has easier parking. Tom (New Volunteer): Great. Is the hub far out at the periphery? I don't want to get lost. Lena (Coordinator): It's quite close to the edge of town, yes. Many volunteers live in nearby periphery neighbourhoods. Tom (New Volunteer): What training will I receive? Lena (Coordinator): We run a basic first aid course. You learn to deal with abdominal injuries and how to recognise abdominal pain. Tom (New Volunteer): So we practise on dummies? Lena (Coordinator): Yes. We use imitation equipment and even imitation food props for role play with children. Tom (New Volunteer): That sounds useful. Do you need ID or anything on the first day? Lena (Coordinator): Please bring photo ID and wear closed shoes. Also, we talk about safety and what to report. Tom (New Volunteer): If someone takes an item, do volunteers handle it themselves? Lena (Coordinator): No. We report theft to the manager who can call the police. They may prosecute when there is clear evidence. Tom (New Volunteer): Do you prosecute for small misunderstandings? Lena (Coordinator): Generally not. We don't want minor incidents prosecuted, but serious thefts are prosecuted to protect the centre. Tom (New Volunteer): Thanks. So to recap: the hub is by the turnpike, bring ID, expect first aid training for abdominal problems, and we'll use imitation props. Lena (Coordinator): Exactly. One more note — if you arrive via the turnpike and see a traffic sign, follow it; the periphery roads can be narrow.
