Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Shop Assistant: Good morning. Welcome to Corner Shop. How can I help you today? Customer: Hi. I bought this jacket last week and I want a refund, please. Shop Assistant: I am sorry. We can help. Do you have the receipt? Customer: Yes, here is the receipt and the original tag. Shop Assistant: Thank you. This will necessitate checking the purchase date in the system. Customer: I hope it is fine. My friend was jealous when I first bought it. Shop Assistant: Many people get jealous of a popular jacket. People often lionize the brand online. Customer: Really? That explains the look. There was a little suspense when I opened it at home. Shop Assistant: I understand. There is a short wait now. A bit of suspense while I check. Customer: Okay. The colour faded a little after one wash. I think it is faulty. Shop Assistant: If it is faulty, it may necessitate repair or a refund depending on the damage. Customer: Do you accept returns after the sale? I read something on your notice. Shop Assistant: Yes. We accept returns within 30 days with receipt. We did a redistribution of stock after the sale. Customer: Redistribution? Does that mean you moved sizes to other stores? Shop Assistant: Exactly. The redistribution sent some sizes to our nearby shop yesterday. Customer: Good to know. My friend was jealous because the window display made it popular. Shop Assistant: We should not lionize one item before checking it. Fans sometimes lionize without facts. Customer: Thanks. Also, do you only accept cash on weekends? I read a note. Shop Assistant: No, that is not right. We accept cards every day. The cash-only note was for a market stall once.
