Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Receptionist/Nurse: Good morning. This is Greenway Clinic. How can I help today? Patient: Hi. I have an appointment for a pregnancy check and my hip pain. My name is Carter. Receptionist/Nurse: Hello Carter. Do you have the confirmation? What time does it say? Patient: The confirmation shows 11:30, but when I booked online it asked if 10:00 would work. Receptionist/Nurse: Okay. We have you down for 11:30 then. Is this your first time here? Patient: Yes. I'm in my second trimester and I'm a bit anxious about the hip pain. Receptionist/Nurse: In the second trimester some discomfort can happen. We'll check the baby and your hip. Patient: Someone on the phone said they might do a skeletal x-ray. That sounded worrying for the pregnancy. Receptionist/Nurse: We usually avoid x-rays in pregnancy. An ultrasound is safer. We won't stigmatize you for asking. Patient: Thank you. I was worried because I had a period of mania last year and some people can be judgemental. Receptionist/Nurse: I'm sorry you've felt judged. It is despicable when people stigmatize someone for past mental health issues. Patient: Exactly. It felt humiliating. Calling someone 'weak' is despicable. Receptionist/Nurse: We take mental health seriously. Do you have any current signs of mania? Rapid speech, little sleep? Patient: Not now. That episode was last year. Now I just have this skeletal ache around my hip joint. Receptionist/Nurse: Alright. We'll do a gentle physical exam. If needed, we'll schedule a skeletal ultrasound or bone review, not an x-ray. Patient: That's a relief. I appreciate that you won't stigmatize me and that you take the trimester into account. Receptionist/Nurse: Good. Please sit in the waiting area. We'll call you in at 11:30. If anything changes, let us know.
