Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Librarian: Good morning. Welcome to the Central Library. How can I help you today? Visitor: Hi. I'm Tom. My wife and I are actually on our honeymoon and we popped in for a quick look. Librarian: Congratulations. Are you finding everything all right? Visitor: Not quite. I have an ankle injury from a fall yesterday, so I can't walk or move carefreely. Librarian: Oh dear. I'm sorry to hear about your ankle injury. We can help. Visitor: I wondered if you have anything to make getting around easier. I don't want to be stuck in the hotel on our honeymoon. Librarian: We can lend a mobility chair for short visits. That will help you move about more carefreely in the building. Visitor: That sounds useful. Do you also have online books? I could download something to read while my foot heals. Librarian: Yes. Our online catalogue has e-books and audiobooks. You can browse it from your phone or laptop. Visitor: Fantastic. Do you do any deliveries? With the ankle injury, leaving the hotel is hard. Librarian: We offer a home delivery service for local addresses and hotels for eligible members. We no longer lend DVDs, though. Visitor: That's good to know. My wife wanted to see local guides too; we thought about a little walking tour during our honeymoon. Librarian: We have a display of local guides and a map by the entrance. Also, we provide free temporary membership for visitors. Visitor: Perfect. Could you show me where to sign up? My foot hurts if I stand too long. Librarian: Of course. I'll bring a chair and a form. We can complete registration at the desk so you don't have to stand. Visitor: Thank you. This helps us enjoy the honeymoon despite the accident. Librarian: You're welcome. I hope your ankle heals quickly and you can explore carefreely soon.
