Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Station Attendant: Good morning. How can I help you at the transport hub today? Passenger: Hi. I need to get to Riverside Park. Is there a bus or a ferry? Station Attendant: There is a ferry across the delta. It leaves from Pier 2, not Pier 3. Passenger: Oh, I thought the ferry left at Pier 3. That sounded a bit dubious. Station Attendant: Yes, the machine at Pier 3 is sometimes dubious about showing the right times. Station Attendant: Also, the ticket machine here is timeworn and can take cards slowly. Passenger: I saw an upscale cafe near the entrance. Maybe I will wait there. Station Attendant: The cafe is quite upscale compared with the rest of the station. Passenger: There is a timeworn bench I like by the small beck. It feels quiet. Station Attendant: That beck runs beside the bus plaza. It is a nice, calm spot. Passenger: Is driver Beck working today? I met a driver called Beck last week. Station Attendant: No, Beck is off today. The ferry staff said driver Patel covers the run. Passenger: How much does the delta ferry cost and how long is the ride? Station Attendant: The ferry costs three pounds and takes about ten minutes across the delta. Station Attendant: If the ticket machine is unreliable, pay the driver with cash. Passenger: If the ferry is full I will wait in the upscale cafe and watch the beck. Station Attendant: That is a good idea. Also, bus 5 goes slower than bus 7 if you prefer a bus. Passenger: Thanks for the help. I will try the ferry from Pier 2 and enjoy the view.
