Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Conductor: Good morning. This is Route 12 to Central Station. Tickets please. Passenger: Morning. Here you go. I'm just going to the last stop. Passenger: I usually like a solitary seat by the window. I enjoy the quiet. Conductor: A solitary seat is fine. Do you have any paperwork for a discounted pass? Passenger: Yes. I handed the paperwork at the office this morning before I left. Conductor: Thanks. Keep your ticket and paperwork handy in case of checks. Passenger: Earlier a man with a guitar got on and tried to entertain passengers. Conductor: He tried to entertain the kids near the door. He even dropped a cup. Passenger: Someone put their butt on the window ledge when the cup spilled. Conductor: Oh dear. Please don't put your butt against the door or the step. Passenger: I was confused about the time. I thought the bus left at 9:15 but the board showed 9:05 earlier. Conductor: Yes, schedules changed today. The driver is on a short break but he will return. Passenger: The office attendant seemed a bit solitary too. I think he often works alone. Conductor: Right. I hope the ride will entertain my nephew; he gets bored easily on long trips.
