Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Travel Consultant: Good morning. I'm the airport travel consultant at the information desk. How can I help? Passenger: Hi. We flew in for a small celebration. It's our tenth anniversary and we'd like a picturesque place nearby to relax. Travel Consultant: Congratulations. For a celebration I'd suggest Harbourview, a picturesque coastal village about 40 kilometres away. Passenger: That sounds perfect. How would we get there and how long does it take? Travel Consultant: There are several options. A scenic train runs but it's about 90 minutes, the ferry takes roughly 45 minutes, and a private shuttle is about 60 minutes one-way. Passenger: Which is easiest to arrange from here? Travel Consultant: I can book the private shuttle for you. It costs around $60 one-way. Or, if you prefer, I can put you in touch with a local consultant who organises private dinners and tours. Passenger: That would be great. Do you know if the waterfront restaurant can reserve a table for the celebration? Travel Consultant: Yes, I can call them. The harbour market is closed on Mondays, but the restaurant usually accepts reservations and can set a small celebration menu. Passenger: Perfect. Please connect me to the local consultant and book the shuttle for this afternoon if possible. Travel Consultant: Certainly. I'll arrange it and email you a confirmation. By the way, there's a free walking tour at 10 am, but it's not related to private celebrations.
