Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Coach Maria: Hi Sam, good morning. Nice to see you at the centre. Sam: Morning, Coach Maria. I'm fine, thanks. You look busy. Coach Maria: A bit. We have a small sports group that meets on Saturday mornings. Sam: That sounds good. I used to play cricket at school, so I could join. Coach Maria: Great. We sometimes play cricket in the park. Would you like to play cricket this Saturday? Sam: Yes, I would. Also, I watched the olympics on TV last year and felt inspired to train more. Coach Maria: Me too. I dream of seeing the olympics in person one day. Sam: By the way, my friends support the browns. They wear browns shirts to the local matches. Coach Maria: Ha, the browns are popular here. If you join, you can meet others who cheer them on. Sam: What's the fee for sessions? Coach Maria: It's ten dollars per session for regular members. Sam: Okay. You mentioned earlier that practice is Wednesday evenings, didn't you? Coach Maria: No, I said Saturday mornings. Sorry, I also have a meeting on Wednesday, so I can't do evenings then. Coach Maria: Actually, new members pay fifteen dollars for their first month, but regular sessions are ten dollars after that. Sam: I see. I'm keen to try a session and meet the team. Coach Maria: Perfect. Come at nine on Saturday. Bring sports shoes and your energy.
