Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Bank Teller: Good morning. Welcome to Riverside Bank. How can I help you today? Customer: Morning. I want to open an account. I need the one with the lowest cost. Bank Teller: Sure. Our Basic account suits people who want minimal charges. Do you mean the smallest monthly fee or the smallest deposit to open it? Customer: Both, please. What's the smallest deposit to start? Bank Teller: For the Basic account the smallest deposit is fifty dollars. That is the minimum to activate the account. Customer: Okay. I am a student. Can I use my student ID as proof? Bank Teller: Yes. A student ID is acceptable if it shows your photo and university name. We can also waive the monthly fee for students for a year. Customer: Great. How long will the process take? Can I leave with a card? Bank Teller: We can complete the application here in about ten minutes and print a temporary card. Bank Teller: However, full verification of identity may take twenty-four to forty-eight hours. During that time some services are limited. Customer: I see. Also, what is the smallest amount I can withdraw from your ATM? Bank Teller: The smallest ATM withdrawal is twenty dollars. We also have a low ATM fee of two dollars for non-customers. Customer: Thanks. I'll bring my student ID and fifty dollars now. Bank Teller: Perfect. Take a seat and I'll prepare the forms. The online sign-up option is quick too if you prefer later.
