Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Anna - Passenger: Excuse me, is this bus to Central Station? It's quite packed today. Mark - Passenger: Yes, it goes to Central. I was listening to the radio and an economist was talking about soybean markets this morning. Anna - Passenger: I saw a quick news flash about higher soybean prices when I left home. Mark - Passenger: The economist said a new trade formation might affect exports. He described a formation between three countries. Anna - Passenger: Earlier I was looking out the window and noticed an interesting rock formation by the river. Mark - Passenger: Yes, and as we left the tunnel there was a sudden flash of lightning. That bright flash surprised everyone. Anna - Passenger: Someone near the back had a small nosebleed and there was a bit of blood on a tissue. It seemed minor. Mark - Passenger: I saw that too. The poster on the bus also asks people to donate blood this week. Anna - Passenger: I thought the next stop would be in five minutes, but the driver said ten. The timetable showed three fifteen, though. Mark - Passenger: We actually left the depot at three thirty, so we might be a bit late. At least I recorded the economist's remarks about soybean supply.
