Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Check-in Agent: Good afternoon. Welcome to Southfield Airport. Can I see your passport and ticket, please? Passenger: Hi, yes. Here they are. I have a flight to Nairobi, seat 21A. Check-in Agent: All right. Your bag is 8 kilograms over the limit. Passenger: Oh no. I must have packed too much. How much is the fee? Check-in Agent: It's fifty dollars for the overweight charge. Would you like me to transfer anything to your carry-on? Passenger: Yes, please. My suitcase rolled away a little earlier and a pair of shoes came out. Check-in Agent: I can help. I rolled the trolley to the scale and I'll put those items in your hand luggage. Passenger: Thanks. By the way, the drive here was unusual. A herd of antelope crossed the road and traffic slowed. Check-in Agent: Really? It's not common near the highway. I once saw a herd of antelope near the service station too. Passenger: Yes. We even rolled the car window down to watch them. That delay made me nervous about boarding time. Check-in Agent: Boarding starts at four o'clock from gate 14. You still have twenty minutes, so you should be fine after we sort your bag. Passenger: Great. Could you tag my bag please and charge the fifty dollars? Check-in Agent: All done. Your bag is tagged and paid. Enjoy your trip to Nairobi, and keep an eye out for more wildlife.
