Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Waiter: Good afternoon. Welcome to The Cedar Table. Would you like a table for one? Customer: Yes, please. I actually had a takeaway order, but I decided to eat here. Waiter: No problem. We usually seat people within five minutes, but today it might be about fifteen. Customer: That's fine. Do you have the lunch set menu? Waiter: We do. The chicken set comes with soup and salad. Waiter: The soup is warm and mild. The salad is served cool, with the dressing on the side if you prefer. Customer: Cool. I'll have the chicken set, and please put the dressing on the side. Customer: Can I have sparkling water? Not cold, just cool, please. Waiter: Sure. The special price for the chicken set is 9.50 today. Waiter: We also have a fish special for 12 if you're interested, but the chicken is popular. Customer: No, the chicken is fine. Could I have a fork instead of chopsticks? Waiter: Of course. Fork noted. By the way, it's a cool spot near the window if you'd like to sit there. Customer: Yes, please. That sounds good. Waiter: All right. Your order will be served at your table in about fifteen minutes.
