Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Bank Advisor: Good morning. Welcome to Riverside Bank. The branch has a calm ambience today. Customer: Good morning. I like the ambience. I need help choosing an account for travel. Bank Advisor: Sure. Do you travel by plane often? Customer: I fly a few times a year for work, so aviation rewards would help. Bank Advisor: We offer a travel credit card that gives aviation miles. Customer: That sounds good. Is there a processor fee for overseas purchases? Bank Advisor: Yes. The card has a small payment processor fee for some foreign transactions. Customer: How about security? I worry about losing my card. Bank Advisor: Don't share your PIN. Sharing it could imperil your account security. Customer: Would applying in branch be better than online? Bank Advisor: You can apply online or here. Our branch is near the main bus terminus on High Street. Customer: Oh right, near the terminus. That makes it easy to visit. Bank Advisor: Also, risky investments could imperil your savings. We advise a low-risk travel fund. Customer: I prefer a simple savings option linked to the travel card. Bank Advisor: Fine. The card processor handles contactless payments and cash machines abroad. Customer: Are there monthly fees? Bank Advisor: The basic current account has no monthly fee, but some cards have a small annual fee and a replacement card fee of four pounds. Customer: Okay. I will apply today. The friendly ambience helped me decide.
