Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Miss Carter (Class Teacher): Good morning. I'm Miss Carter, Jamie's class teacher. Tom (Parent): Morning. Thanks for calling. How is he doing at school? Miss Carter (Class Teacher): Overall well. I wanted to mention small things I noticed. Tom (Parent): Please do. I'm a bit worried about the move next month. Miss Carter (Class Teacher): I saw him look thoughtful during circle time yesterday. Miss Carter (Class Teacher): He showed a little melancholy when we talked about change. Tom (Parent): At home he had moments of melancholy about leaving his old preschool. Miss Carter (Class Teacher): He also did lovely art. He drew a caterpillar and labelled its legs. Tom (Parent): He loves bugs. I remember he found a caterpillar in our garden. Miss Carter (Class Teacher): In class garden work would help him. Gardening calms him. Miss Carter (Class Teacher): At snack he only ate a small morsel of biscuit. Tom (Parent): He can be picky. I once found a tiny morsel in his pocket. Miss Carter (Class Teacher): I recommend more outdoor play and a simple project with caterpillars. Miss Carter (Class Teacher): That may reduce the melancholy and help him feel secure. Tom (Parent): That sounds good. Should I bring anything for the project? Miss Carter (Class Teacher): Just a spare snack. If he only takes a morsel, we won't waste food. Tom (Parent): Thanks. I'll try the garden idea and watch his mood at home.
