Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Insurance Agent: Good morning. I'm the insurance agent. How can I help with your travel plans? Traveler: Hi. I'm heading to Vienna for a week. There's a soprano recital I don't want to miss. I even bought the soprano's autobiography to read on the flight. Insurance Agent: That sounds lovely. We offer a policy that covers medical expenses up to one hundred thousand dollars. Trip cancellation is protected up to five thousand. Emergency evacuation is included. Traveler: Great. I don't want to cumber myself with lots of forms. I prefer a simple plan. Also, I don't believe everything is predestined, so I like preparing for the unexpected. Insurance Agent: We won't predestine any outcomes. Each claim is assessed individually. We also try not to cumber customers with paperwork. The basic plan has baggage cover up to one thousand dollars. Traveler: What about claims? I read in the autobiography that a singer's tour was cancelled and she got refunded quickly. Insurance Agent: You must file a claim within thirty days of the incident. Refunds are usually processed within fourteen business days, though occasionally they can take up to twenty-one. Pandemic cancellations require an add-on. Traveler: Okay. That helps. I just want minimal hassle and reliable cover for the recital and my flight.
