Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Information Officer: Good morning. Central Station information desk. How can I help you today? Commuter: Good morning. I usually take bus 52. Today the driver said services are disrupted. Is there a crisis? Information Officer: Yes. There is a fuel crisis affecting some bus routes this morning. Bus 52 is cancelled. Commuter: Oh no. I have a monthly pass. Can I use it on the tram or is it only for buses? Information Officer: Your monthly pass covers buses and trams. However, trams are crowded because many people are changing from buses due to the crisis. Commuter: Any other alternatives? Maybe the No. 10 express or the subway? Information Officer: The No. 10 express is running, but it's slower than usual. The subway is operating, though the downtown line has a ten-minute delay. Commuter: If a service is cancelled, can I get a refund for my trip? Information Officer: If service is cancelled due to the crisis, you may request a refund or a free transfer. Please go to platform 3 at the ticket counter for help. Commuter: Thanks. I'll try the subway and then visit platform 3. I hope the crisis eases soon. Information Officer: We hope so too. Have a safe journey.
