Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Receptionist: Good afternoon. Welcome to ActiveLife Sports Centre. How can I help you today? New Member: Hi. I am Ali. I want to join for a short time, maybe three months. Receptionist: Okay, Ali. Is it TRUE you want a shorter membership because of travel? New Member: Yes, that's TRUE. I travel in four months, so three months is ideal. Receptionist: Great. Our club has an energetic atmosphere. People are active and friendly here. New Member: I like energetic classes. I usually feel more energetic in the evening after work. Receptionist: We are also a multicultural centre. Members come from many countries and languages. New Member: That sounds good. I enjoy meeting people from different places. Receptionist: We have an orientation on Saturday at 10 am. There is a free trial class at 11 am the same day. Receptionist: We run an energetic bootcamp on Tuesday mornings, and a multicultural dance class on Thursday evenings at 6 pm. New Member: I can't come in the morning. The Thursday dance at 6 pm suits me because I prefer evening sessions. Receptionist: Perfect. I'll book you for three months starting next Monday and reserve a spot in the Thursday class.
