Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Immigration Officer: Good morning. This is border control. Could I see your passport please? Traveler: Morning. Sure. Here is my passport. I'm British. Immigration Officer: Nice to meet you. What is the purpose of your visit today? And what type of visa do you have? Traveler: I'm visiting as a tourist. I have a tourist visa for three weeks. Immigration Officer: Where will you be staying while you're here? Traveler: I'll be staying with a friend. The address is 18 Maple Street, Apartment 4B. Immigration Officer: Are you bringing any items that need to be declared? Can you tell me what type of items they are? Traveler: Yes. I have two bottles of wine and a box of chocolates to give as gifts. I also have a small camera and some prescription medicine. Immigration Officer: How much cash are you carrying with you? Traveler: About eight hundred dollars in total. Immigration Officer: Do you have any plants, seeds or animal products to declare? Traveler: No plants or seeds.
