Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Bank Clerk: Good morning. Welcome to Riverside Bank. How can I help you today? Customer: Morning. I want to open a junior savings account for my daughter. Bank Clerk: That sounds good. Our junior account is designed for impressionable young people. Customer: I like that. My daughter is very impressionable and I want her to learn to save early. Bank Clerk: We also run free seminars. Last month we discussed budgeting and even simple science topics. Customer: Speaking of science, I work as a geologist. I study igneous rocks most days. Bank Clerk: Oh, igneous rocks are fascinating. We had a local display about igneous formations at the seminar. Customer: Thanks. I am a bit beset by worries about fees and family money arguments. Bank Clerk: I understand. Many customers feel beset by confusing charges. Customer: The stress has been bad. I even had an ulcer last year from worry. Bank Clerk: I am sorry to hear that. Stress-related ulcers can return if finances cause disharmony at home. Customer: Yes. Money has caused disharmony between me and my partner before. Bank Clerk: We try to help. Recently our branch was beset by a few small fraud attempts, but nothing serious. Customer: That is worrying. Disharmony or fraud would make anyone impressionable or anxious. Bank Clerk: To open the account we need ID and a small deposit. The junior plan avoids many fees so it should ease stress and reduce the risk of ulcers returning. Customer: Great. I have my ID. I also brought a small pamphlet about igneous samples for your seminar, if you like. Bank Clerk: We'd appreciate that. It will help make our talks less abstract for impressionable children and reduce any disharmony about saving later on.
