Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Information Agent: Good afternoon. This is the information desk. How can I help you today? Traveler: Hi. I have a connection from gate B14. The terminal is such a hive of activity today. Information Agent: Yes, B14 is showing on the screens. Be aware the area near that gate becomes a hive at peak times, with lots of people. Traveler: I'm worried my carry-on will overflow the overhead bin. I was instructed at check-in to limit liquids, but I read online about different law for duty-free. Information Agent: Security law requires liquids to be in containers of 100 millilitres or less, all in one clear plastic bag. I can instruct you how to arrange them in the trays. Traveler: Thanks. The queue looked like it would zigzag with the barriers. I saw signs that the line zigzags before security. Information Agent: Yes, queues often zigzag through the stanchions. If the overhead bins overflow, we sometimes gate-check bags or ask you to check them in at the desk. Traveler: Is there any shuttle? I was told a shuttle goes to remote stand 3, but I prefer to stay near the shops. The coffee area sometimes overflows into the corridor. Information Agent: There is a shuttle for remote stands, but for your connection the gate is at the main concourse. I'll instruct you to keep liquids out of pockets and into the clear bag.
