Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Insurance Agent: Good morning, TravelCare. This is Anna, how can I help? Traveler: Hi Anna, I m Tom. I need travel insurance for a two week trip to Spain next month. Insurance Agent: Great. What is the actual date of departure? Traveler: I leave on June 12 and return on June 26, so it s exactly two weeks. Insurance Agent: Okay. Do you want standard cover or an upgrade? Standard includes emergency medical and baggage cover up to €500. Traveler: I m carrying camera equipment. That sounds low. Is upgrading to higher baggage cover available? Insurance Agent: Yes, we can upgrade baggage to €2,000 for an extra premium. Many customers feel the standard limit is ridiculous if they travel with electronics. Traveler: That makes sense. Some of these rules seem a bit old fashioned, like filling in paper forms. Insurance Agent: I agree it can feel old fashioned. We still accept an old fashioned paper form if you prefer, though you can also upload documents online. Insurance Agent: Also, some clients think the excess is ridiculous, but the actual excess on most policies is €100, which helps keep premiums lower. Traveler: Right. I ll email my booking reference and the actual receipts for pre paid activities. Insurance Agent: Perfect. I m joyful to help and it s always joyful to sort these things before a trip. Traveler: Thanks, Anna. It s reassuring. I don t want an old fashioned surprise while I m away.
