Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Airport Staff: Welcome to International Airport. How can I assist you today? Traveler: Hi, I need to check in for my flight to New York. My name is Parker. Airport Staff: Great, Mr. Parker. Do you have any bags to check? Traveler: Yes, just a small suitcase. It has a few books and a cushion for the flight. Airport Staff: Perfect. You can place your suitcase here. Have you scrawled your name on the tag? Traveler: Oh no! I forgot to do that. Let me write it down quickly. Airport Staff: No problem at all. Just be careful not to dent the other tags while doing that. Traveler: I've done that. Do I need to pay for extra luggage or is it included? Airport Staff: Let me check... it’s included, but you will have to pay for any excess weight. Traveler: Okay, and what about my boarding pass? Will I get it now? Airport Staff: Yes, here it is. I’ve also varnished it to protect the information. Traveler: Thank you! Anything else I should know? Airport Staff: Just remember to arrive at the gate at least 30 minutes before boarding.
