Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Immigration Officer: Good morning. Passport and landing card, please. Traveler: Here you go. I was in Porto for ten days visiting family. Immigration Officer: Purpose of visit? Traveler: Holiday and a few souvenirs. I bought some candles and local honey. Immigration Officer: Do any of the candles have a wick that could be exposed? Traveler: Yes, each candle has a visible wick at the top. Immigration Officer: I need to mention that an official memorandum about declarations came into effect this month. Traveler: I read the memorandum on the airline website yesterday. Immigration Officer: We will record this interview. There is a camera and a microphone on the desk. Traveler: I heard an announcement over the microphone before baggage claim. Immigration Officer: You seem to have a brisk stride when you walked through the gate. Mind slowing down a bit? Traveler: Sorry, I was trying to keep up with the queue. I tend to take airport queues in stride. Immigration Officer: How many candles did you pack? Traveler: Three small candles. The packaging mentioned abundant local beeswax in the honey and in one candle. Immigration Officer: We need to check them. A wick can be flammable, and abundant liquids or foodstuffs sometimes need inspection. Traveler: No problem. The wick is short and wrapped. I also bought some jam, but only a small jar. Immigration Officer: Right. I will make a note on the form and on the memorandum copy for this flight. Please place the candles on the tray.
