Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Ticket Officer: Good morning. Welcome to Central Bus Station. How can I help you today? Passenger: Morning. I'm going to Riverside. I tried the machine, but it asked for insertion of a chip card and I wasn't sure. Ticket Officer: Ah, yes. The insertion is simple. Put the chip into the small slot, then wait for the green light. The insertion slot is at the bottom right. Passenger: Thanks. Also, I'm cognizant of morning delays. Are the buses on time today? Ticket Officer: I'm cognizant too. Peak hours are busy; it's indisputable that mornings get crowded. The new timetable is laudable because it adds more trips. Passenger: Laudable, yes. I heard the express bus is faster. Is it indisputable the express leaves from platform 2? Ticket Officer: The express usually leaves around 10:15 from platform 3 today, though some displays still show 10:30. If you're unsure, call our freefone helpline on 0800 555 101. Passenger: Good. I'll note that. It's laudable the station also has a freefone for travellers. I'll be cognizant of the platform change. Ticket Officer: Great. And remember, if any problem, use the freefone number or ask an officer. Your quick check and awareness are laudable and help everyone.
