Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Check-in Agent: Good morning. This is Gate B counter. How can I help you today? Passenger: Morning. I'm flying to Madrid and my name is Collins. I have insulin with me and I need to know if it can be kept cool. Check-in Agent: Yes, we can store medication. If it's insulin, please show the prescription and we'll put it in the medical fridge. Passenger: Thanks. I also had a problem at the gate. Someone tried to usurp my reserved seat and caused a ruckus. Check-in Agent: I'm sorry to hear that. We won't allow anyone to usurp a seat. Which row was it? Passenger: Row 14. It upset people. I kept calm because I'm reading a book on rationalism and it helped me think clearly. Check-in Agent: I understand. The crew were very workmanlike when they intervened and settled the situation quickly. Passenger: They really did a workmanlike job. The ruckus moved to the lounge afterwards, but it was under control. Check-in Agent: Good. Please show your prescription so we can store the insulin now. By the way, boarding will start at gate B12 in about twenty minutes. Passenger: That's fine. The rationalism in that book made me avoid arguing. I prefer calm. Thank you for helping with the insulin and the seat. Check-in Agent: You're welcome. Remember, if anyone tries again to usurp a seat, call staff. We'll handle any ruckus professionally.
