Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Receptionist: Good afternoon. Welcome to the Grand Oak Hotel. How can I help you today? Guest: Hi, I have a reservation under Lane for two nights. I arrived early and wondered about an earlier check-in. Receptionist: May I see your ID and a card please? Our standard check-in time is 3 pm, but if a room is ready we can let you in early. Guest: Could I have a quiet room between the third and fifth floors? I prefer something away from the street. Receptionist: Yes, we have a room available between those floors. By the way, breakfast is served until 11 am and the pool is open 24 hours for guests. Guest: That sounds good. I saw a bully in the park next to the hotel yesterday and felt uneasy. I also thought I saw someone with what looked like a gun. Receptionist: I am very sorry. We have a zero-tolerance policy for bullying and our security will intervene if anyone bullies other guests or staff. Receptionist: We also do not allow guns on the property. If someone reports a weapon our team calls the police immediately. Guest: Thank you. Is there a gym here? I like to use a fitness facility in the mornings. Receptionist: Yes, the fitness facility is on the second floor. We also have a small business facility for meetings and a one-acre rose garden behind the building. Guest: I noticed the grounds were large on arrival. How many acres is the whole hotel property? Receptionist: The hotel sits on about ten acres. If you want, security can walk you between the garden and the parking area for peace of mind.
