Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Receptionist: Good morning. This is the travel insurance desk. How can I help you today? Traveler: Hi, I'm leaving next week for ten days and want to get cover now. Receptionist: Our standard policy covers emergency medical care up to 100,000 pounds. Receptionist: It also includes repatriation and 24-hour assistance for any emergencies. Receptionist: We provide lost-luggage cover up to 750 pounds and cancellation cover up to 1,500 pounds. Receptionist: You can add a hazardous-sports endorsement for an extra fee if needed. Traveler: That seems reasonable. How do I pay for the policy? Receptionist: You can pay here at the desk, or go to the banco if you prefer to transfer funds. Receptionist: If you need cash, go to the banco across the street; they can help with withdrawals. Traveler: Do I need anything specific to activate the policy immediately? Receptionist: Yes. Bring ID and the booking reference to activate the policy at the desk. Receptionist: If you have pre-existing conditions, there is an online form to declare them. Receptionist: Complete that form before departure and send it to the insurer to ensure cover. Traveler: Okay. I'll go online now to fill the form and then maybe visit the banco later. Receptionist: Good plan. Keep the policy number; the helpline will ask for it and the booking reference.
