Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Information Agent: Good afternoon. Welcome to City Airport information. How can I help you today? Passenger: Hi. I'm heading into town with my son. I'm a single daddy and I need a comfortable ride. Information Agent: We have a shuttle, taxis, and a private chauffeur service. Would you prefer a chauffeur? Passenger: Yes please. As a single parent with luggage and a stroller, a chauffeur is easier. My boy still calls me daddy. Information Agent: Okay. The chauffeur is a private driver and costs £40 flat to downtown neighborhoods like North Park and Riverside. Passenger: Can you tell me how long to those neighborhoods? I want the quickest route. Information Agent: To North Park it's about 25 minutes and to Riverside about 35 minutes. The chauffeur will wait up to 30 minutes at arrivals. Passenger: That sounds great. Book the chauffeur, please. We'll meet near exit B. My son is four and needs a child seat. Information Agent: Perfect. I'll add a child seat for a small fee. If you prefer a cheaper option, the shuttle is free but slower and stops at several neighborhoods.
