Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Parent: Good morning. I'm Sarah. I'm thinking of moving with my son to a woodland neighbourhood. Parent: We need to find a realtor who knows the schools nearby and arranges quick viewings. Parent: I also worry he'll have to take a test for the new school's placement and I want to understand the format. Parent: I'd like him to take an interest in science, but learning has to be Fast because we have just three weeks to move. Counsellor: Hi Sarah, I'm Mark, the school counsellor. Moving into woodland areas is quite popular with families. Counsellor: I can suggest where to find a realtor, and give you a local list of agents and recent parent references. Counsellor: The placement process usually asks children to take a test, though sometimes it's practical rather than written. Counsellor: If you want things done Fast, we offer a fast-track evaluation and weekend sessions to prepare candidates. Counsellor: To help him take an interest, we recommend after-school clubs, a science mentor and woodland nature trips to spark curiosity. Parent: Is the test next month or next week? We prefer next month because the move is hectic. Counsellor: We can arrange an earlier slot, even next week, though the official open day is on Sunday. Parent: Great. Can you email the realtor list and the test forms? I'd like to find a realtor who organises viewings near the woodland trails. Counsellor: I'll email everything by Friday. We'll also suggest a tutor if you need a Fast solution to prepare quickly. Parent: Thank you. I hope he starts to take an interest soon.
