Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Receptionist: Good afternoon. Welcome to the Sunny Park Hotel. Do you have a reservation? Guest: Yes. It is under Lee. I am staying three nights. I was told to stand by the newsstand while my room is prepared. Receptionist: That's fine. Could you please stand by the newsstand for five minutes? I will check your ID and your card now. Guest: Sure. The weather is lovely today. The sunshine is very nice. Receptionist: It is. If you like, you can sit in the garden. The sunshine there is warm and pleasant. Receptionist: By the way, breakfast is included with your room. We also offer free Wi-Fi and a small gym if you need them. Guest: Is this hotel old? I like classic places. Receptionist: Yes. The hotel has been here for a hundred years. We will celebrate our hundred years next month and we have a small museum about the history. Guest: That's wonderful. I will stand by the newsstand now. Thank you. Receptionist: Thank you. I will bring your key in a moment. Enjoy the sunshine and have a good stay.
