Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Immigration Officer: Good morning. Immigration here. Could I see your passport please? Traveler: Good morning. Sure. Here you are. I'm visiting for a cultural festival and some research. Immigration Officer: Do you have an itinerary? Traveler: Yes, I have an itinerary for five nights. I also printed a copy. Immigration Officer: May I see the printed itinerary then? Traveler: Here it is. I'm attending a workshop on folk divination and a few museum meetings. Immigration Officer: Are you bringing any personal items related to that? For example items used for divination? Traveler: Just a small deck of cards and a book on divination. They are gifts and study material. Immigration Officer: Do you have any health issues? Any symptoms that could be contagious? Traveler: No current symptoms. I had a mild cold last month, but there has been cessation of symptoms for two weeks. Immigration Officer: Do you have a doctor's testimony to confirm that you are not contagious? Traveler: Yes. I have a medical testimony from my doctor that says I'm not contagious. Immigration Officer: Sometimes we also ask for a testimony from your employer or a reference. Do you have that? Traveler: Yes, I have a letter from my manager as a second testimony about my research purpose. Immigration Officer: I see in small talk on the flight you mentioned you might extend your stay to seven nights. Traveler: I said that but I will stay five nights as my itinerary shows. Immigration Officer: Okay. Be aware that the cessation of quarantine or other restrictions would depend on tests if needed. Traveler: Understood. Thank you. I'm looking forward to the festival. Immigration Officer: Welcome. Enjoy your visit.
