Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Receptionist: Good afternoon. Welcome to the Grand Plaza Hotel. How can I help you today? Guest: Hi. I have a reservation under the name Carter for three nights. I might arrive late, around eleven. Receptionist: All right, Mr Carter. Could I see your ID and a card for the deposit, please? Guest: Sure. Here is my ID. Also, could you bring an extra blanket? My room might be cold tonight. Receptionist: Of course. We'll send an extra blanket right away. Housekeeping can leave the blanket on your bed. Guest: Thanks. One more thing — I have an inflatable neck pillow. Do you have a pump I could use? Receptionist: Yes. We keep a small pump at reception. I can bring a pump and an adapter to your room if you like. Guest: Great. Is there hand sanitizer in the lobby? Receptionist: Yes. There's a hand sanitizer at the front desk and a sanitizer pump by the elevators. Guest: Could you also leave a travel-size sanitizer in my room? Receptionist: Certainly. Housekeeping can place a small bottle of sanitizer and another blanket if you need it later. Receptionist: By the way, breakfast is served from six to ten and the pool closes at seven. Guest: Thank you. That's helpful. I'll see you later tonight.
