Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Bus Driver: Good morning. This is bus 12 to Central Station. How can I help you today? Passenger: Morning. I'm going to Market Street. I want to get off there, please. Bus Driver: All right. Get off at the third stop. The bus finishes at Central, but Market Street is before that. Passenger: Thanks. I have a laptop, so I will sit near the front. Bus Driver: That is fine. It's my duty to keep passengers safe and watch the bus. Passenger: I appreciate that. Are there many stops after Market Street? Bus Driver: Only two more stops after yours. Also, I will be off duty at five o'clock. Passenger: Oh, I hope you get home on time. Do you have another driver after you? Bus Driver: Yes. The next driver will take over. It is her duty then to finish the route. Passenger: By the way, I noticed a group near the stop yesterday. Bus Driver: I saw a gang of teenagers there too. They were loud but calm. Passenger: It looked like a gang to me at first, but they were only chatting and not causing trouble. Bus Driver: That is good. Enjoy the ride and remember to get off at Market Street.
