Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Waiter: Good afternoon. Welcome. Do you have a table in mind or shall I seat you by the window? Customer: Window sounds good, thanks. I only have a short stop. I need to book an airline tonight, so I must be quick. Waiter: No problem. Our lunch special is grilled salmon, but many people come for teatime. Teatime starts at four o'clock. Customer: That’s handy. I usually come at teatime when I can relax. Today I just want something light and some tea. Waiter: We have fresh cheese scones and a pot of Earl Grey. The baker makes the scones and the barista prepares the tea. Customer: Perfect. I’ll have a cheese scone and a pot of Earl Grey, please. I have to book an airline for my return too. Waiter: Right away. The teatime special is quite popular with travellers. Selling a few scones helps the small team make a buck. Customer: I get that. I need to make a buck before I leave town, so I’m watching my spending today. Waiter: Understood. Coffee or more tea for later? Some customers pair the salmon with a salad, but many prefer a scone at teatime. Customer: Just the scone and tea now, please. I’ll pay by card when you bring it over.
