Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Shop Assistant: Good afternoon. Welcome. How can I help you today? Customer: Hi. I want to return an armchair I bought here ten days ago. Shop Assistant: I'm sorry to hear that. Can you tell me what is wrong with the armchair? Customer: I don't want to get cross, but the armchair has a loose leg and a red stain on one arm. Shop Assistant: Please don't be cross. We'll look at it. Do you have the receipt? Customer: Yes, I have the receipt in my bag. I also bought a small bed for my hamster last week. Shop Assistant: Oh, a hamster. Did the hamster cause any damage to the bed or cushion? Customer: Yes, the hamster chewed a corner of the little bed that came with the cushion. Shop Assistant: Right. The receipt shows the armchair purchase is within our 14-day policy. Customer: I also bought a lamp and a rug here before, but I only want a refund for the armchair. Shop Assistant: We can offer a refund or repair for the armchair. Can you wait while I check with my manager? Customer: Sure. I don't want to be cross about this. Thank you for checking.
