Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Receptionist: Good morning. Welcome to Riverside Health Clinic. How can I help you today? Patient: Hi. I have an appointment under the name Carter. I used to serve in a battalion, so I come for routine checks. Receptionist: Okay, Mr Carter. I see an appointment here at 10:30 this morning. Patient: Oh, I thought it was at 10:00, but that's fine. Lately I have had a tight feeling in my chest and some shoulder pain. Patient: When I was younger I felt almost immortal and ignored small pains. Receptionist: We will note the chest tightness. By the way, did you bring the codicil to update your veteran records? Patient: Yes, I added a codicil last year after some paperwork. Also, my son was upset over a ransom story on the local news, and that stress made the pain worse. Receptionist: I understand. We recommend cutting back on supplements. Your notes show a superfluity of vitamins and tablets. Patient: The previous clinic gave me a superfluity of pills. My battalion medic would not have given so many. Receptionist: The ransom report is separate from your medical issue, but stress matters. Don't assume you're immortal; take it easy and bring the codicil to reception. Patient: Okay. I'll bring the codicil, reduce the pills, and wait for the doctor. Thanks for your help.
