Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Receptionist: Good morning. Welcome to Riverside Dental. Do you have an appointment? Patient: Good morning. Yes, I booked under Lee. I thought it was at 10 o'clock. Receptionist: Let me check. Ah, I see your booking here for 10:30. We usually ask patients to complete a short health quiz on the tablet first. Patient: A quiz? That will take long? Receptionist: No, it's quick. About five minutes. It asks about medicines and if you have pain in your mouth. Patient: I do have a sore spot near an old dental bridge. I wanted the dentist to look at that. Receptionist: All right. Please fill the quiz and then sit in the waiting area. The dentist may ask you to rinse your mouth before the check. Patient: Okay. Should I wait ten minutes or more? Receptionist: It should be around fifteen minutes, though sometimes it's closer to half an hour. Also, the dentist will check the bridge and the filling during the exam. Patient: Great. I appreciate you fitting me in. Will there be a feedback quiz at the end? Receptionist: There is an optional feedback quiz later. We try to bridge the gap between appointments by calling patients if follow-up is needed. Patient: Thanks. I'll do the quiz now and rinse my mouth when they ask.
