Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Shop Assistant: Good afternoon. How can I help you today? Customer: Hi. I bought a jacket at the central store yesterday and I need a refund. Shop Assistant: I see. Do you have the receipt with you? Customer: Yes, here it is. I paid 60 dollars on sale. Shop Assistant: Was the jacket reduced from eighty dollars? Sometimes tags show both prices. Customer: Yes, it was marked down. The problem is the zip sticks and the size is small. Shop Assistant: That is fine. Our policy allows returns within 14 days with a receipt. Customer: Good. My weakness is buying things when there is a sale. Shop Assistant: Many customers say that. It is an easy weakness to understand. Customer: Honestly, I'm unlucky in love lately, so I treat myself with shopping. Shop Assistant: I'm sorry to hear that. A treat is understandable if you are unlucky in love. Shop Assistant: We can refund the full amount to the card you used. Customer: That works. I like this shop because it has a good reputation for returns. Shop Assistant: We care about our reputation. Quick refunds help maintain that reputation. Shop Assistant: I will process the refund now. It may take a few days to appear on your statement.
