I want to talk about how cities change. Recently our council proposed a redevelopment for the waterfront. They say it will modernize the area and create more jobs. Officials promised not to renege on plans to protect the old park and its trees. Yet last month they did renege on a smaller pledge about a community garden. If they renege repeatedly, public trust will be damaged. The designers suggested they might dismantle the old bandstand to make room for a glass pavilion. They plan to dismantle a few peripheral structures as well, according to the brief. Planners also say the scheme will curb traffic through better signals.
