Today I want to talk about how images and interface choices shape what we see on social media. Designers often choose a matte look for photos to reduce glare and make content feel more personal. In contrast, some brands still use a glossy shine to create a high-gloss, commercial impression. A recent article even claimed that one study found 90 percent of users preferred a matte filter, which sounds dramatic. Another blog went further and said a major platform now removes images with too much shine. Whether true or exaggerated, those headlines tell us something about perception. Parallel to this is the ongoing move toward flat design for apps and profiles. Flat layouts keep icons and buttons two-dimensional and uncluttered, helping readers scan quickly. Flat visuals are also easier to adapt to different screens. Still, too flat can feel sterile, so creators balance simplicity with a small amount of texture or subtle shine to let key elements catch the eye. Many influencers use a soft matte finish on portraits, then add a single highlight so faces seem natural rather than overly shiny. Listeners should notice how matte, flat and shine are used intentionally to convey mood, professionalism or warmth.
