I'm talking about a recent advertising campaign for a new laundry detergent. The ad used a bold mascot: a carp. The carp appeared in posters and TV spots. Some viewers saw the carp as a symbol of an invader species. Others thought it cleverly linked to local cuisine. The brand ran bilingual commercials. Bilingual slogans appeared in English and Spanish on billboards. The bilingual approach aimed to welcome immigrant shoppers. However, the campaign had problems. The company spent heavily on radio spots. The radio buys were inefficient and reached few of the intended consumers. That inefficient allocation undermined the return on ad spend. Environmental groups objected. They argued that featuring a carp glamorized an invasive invader in local waterways. The carp imagery sparked debate about ecology and taste. The detergent itself was promoted as gentle and effective. Yet critics said some claims implied it 'defeats invaders' like bacteria, which was misleading. Management also admitted the campaign mixed metaphors and targeted the wrong age group on TV, another inefficient choice. Despite controversy, some shoppers responded positively to the bilingual messaging. Others avoided the product because they associated the carp mascot with ecological harm rather than cleanliness.
