English Brain Route

I set two pictures side by side on the desk and push them a little closer. I shift my gaze from one frame to the other, watching how each line mirrors the other. A small adjustment in focus makes the space between them feel thinner, like they keep a shared look. When the similarity shows up in that moment, the word becomes a felt sense rather than a rule.

Real Context

Similar describes a likeness or resemblance between two or more things without claiming they are identical. It commonly appears with to, as in similar to a previous model, or in phrases like similar in size or similar in function. It can also introduce a comparison of ideas, situations, or outcomes as analogous to one another. Note that similar is not the same as same or identical, and it is not always interchangeable with like. In English, choose the word that best fits the degree of likeness and the syntactic pattern you need. Pay attention to collocations and context to avoid vague or inaccurate comparisons.

Usage Reminders

  • Use with to for likeness; use in for areas of similarity; choose like only for comparisons; avoid overusing similar where there is a stronger term; remember not to equate similar with identical

Common Misconceptions

  • Similar means exactly the same
  • You can always replace like with similar in any comparison
  • Similar must be followed by to
  • Similar cannot describe ideas or situations
  • Using similar for numerical equality is correct

Thinking Differences
