Five-Pass Listening Method

Turn one listening piece into reusable English input

Do not stop at one play. Split the same episode into five passes: gist first, then language support, shadowing, dictation, and a final replay without subtitles.

Pass 1

Blind listen

Listen without subtitles and only catch the big idea, topic, and main information.

Pass 2

English subtitles

Clear up unknown words and hard sentences. Use a dictionary and short notes if needed.

Pass 3

Shadowing

Repeat line by line and imitate pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.

Pass 4

Dictation

Pick a few key sentences and write what you hear to train form and structure.

Pass 5

Replay without subtitles

Listen again with no text support and notice what is now easier and clearer.

After Training

Share and retell

Share notes, new words, or one useful concept, then retell the episode in your own words.

Next Step

From intensive to extensive

Recycle intensively studied episodes as background listening and scale volume with familiar material.

📝 IELTS Speaking Dialogue Transcript

Interviewer: Good morning. Thanks for coming in. How are you feeling? Candidate: Morning. A bit nervous, but ready. I had to throw on some clothes after a volunteer shift. Interviewer: You mentioned in your CV you organised sports events. Can you give a specific example? Candidate: Sure. Last summer I ran entertainment at a local stadium. During halftime I coordinated performers and sound checks. Interviewer: So you managed logistics when people came on and off stage? Candidate: Exactly. Sometimes a performer was late and I had to tell them to quickly throw on some clothes and get on stage. Interviewer: That sounds hectic. Did you also handle outdoor events? Candidate: Yes. I volunteered at a national park where we studied a volcanic crater and ran small visitor workshops. Interviewer: You said 'during halftime' in your email too. Was that your main point of learning? Candidate: I brought it up because during halftime I practiced quick crowd management. It taught me to prioritise safety and timing. Interviewer: The national park work sounds different from stadium work. What skills transferred? Candidate: Both needed clear communication and quick decisions. At the park we inspected trails near the crater and guided groups. Interviewer: One last thing. You mentioned a short radio job on your CV. Was that full time? Candidate: No, it was just a weekend gig. The main experience is events and the park volunteering. I also refereed youth matches once or twice to build confidence.
